After Holiday Zoo Trip

Tiger - San Diego Zoo Safari Park

After the holiday season, Jason and I usually take a trip to the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park for the weekend. This year was no exception. We usually wait a few weeks after the holidays before taking our trip but I wanted a chance to see the zoo's Christmas lights. The lights were fun, but I think I'd rather go with less crowds when the animals are easier to visit.

Even though it was really crowded and a bit chilly it was fun and we got to see a lot of the animals, even some of the super special new babies! Here are some of my favorite pictures from the trip.

Sleepy Tasmanian Devil

Week Old Gorilla - San Diego Zoo

This isn't a very good picture, but it was one of the highlights of our visit, the week old baby gorilla. This little baby gorilla was born the day after Christmas.

When we were at the Safari Park, Joanne the baby gorilla delivered by C-section last year was up and about and having all kinds of fun. This gorilla is close to 10 moths old now I think.
Mom and Baby Serval - San Diego Zoo
We also got a chance to see the new baby serval. All in all a really great trip for getting to see all the youngest additions to the zoo. I haven't even gotten to my favorite baby animal from this trip yet though...
Baby Greater One Horned Rhino - San Diego Zoo Safari Park
A baby greater one horned rhino! This absolutely adorable rhino baby was born on Thanksgiving.

His mom wasn't producing enough milk, if any, so the keepers are hand raising him.

He was about 160 pounds at birth and if I remember correctly he now weighs closer to 250.

His horn will start to come in at about a year old, around the time when a rhino stops nursing.

I knew baby rhinos were cute, but until seeing one so close I'd never fully comprehended the full extent of their adorableness. I probably could have watched this little guy all day but he was only out in his yard for a little while.

I hoped you enjoyed seeing some of my favorite pictures and highlights from our zoo trip. What is your favorite part of going to the zoo? Which animal do you most look forward to seeing?
